Based in Brisbane, The Trail Co. is Aussie Grit Apparel’s newest retail partner in Australia.
Active participants in the trail running community, The Trail Co. was born from a desire to build a place for the trail running community that creates excitement and a sense of pride.
Hosted by The Trail Co., The Guzzler is Brisbane’s Largest Ultra Trail Run event and this year will feature a ‘race within the race’ – The Hell Hole Hustle. Sponsored by Aussie Grit, the fastest guy and gal to make it through Hell Hole break will win an Aussie Grit prize pack.
We asked founders, Laura & Tim, to tell us about their next big event.
How was The Guzzler born?
We love our Brissie trails and for a long time have wanted a way to show them off to the rest of the world. All too often, people fly in to Brisbane and then head straight to the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast, without seeing any of our leafy city.
As The Trail Co. has matured, we’ve finally had a bit of time to breathe and so we put our plan into action with a spectacular trail tour that starts and finishes only 5 mins away from our shop.
The Guzzler is proudly 99.9% trails and, we like to say, 100% fun!
Tell us a bit of history about the location?
Brisbane is an amazing city, especially for outdoorsy types.
Mt Coot-tha, home of the Yugarapul Aboriginal people, is the gateway to the massive D’Aguilar National Park and also to many of the reservoirs which were built to supply Brisbane with its water.
The Guzzler spends the daylight hours touring three of the oldest reservoirs in SE Queensland and you get some pretty special views along the way.
What kind of terrain can runners expect?
We’ve got a bit of everything, from wide fire trails to single track. There is very little flat to contend with, with 4600m vert in the 100km race and over 2100m in the 50km, you need to do plenty of rolling to get to the end!
The tracks are generally wide on the ascents and narrower on the descents which should make for some fun running.
What is “Hell Hole Break”?
For Brissie’s local trail community, Hell Hole is a familiar name.
The trail drops steeply down to a beautiful little gully where, depending on the weather in the lead up, there may be a small creek crossing. Then you need to climb straight back out again which is where most people discover why it’s called Hell Hole!
The Hell Hole Hustle sounds tough. What is involved?
The Hell Hole Hustle is a race within the race.
The fastest male and female from the exit of McAfees lookout checkpoint through to the end of Hell Hole Break will be crowned our Grit-tiest Girl and Guy! The beauty of this is that it won’t necessarily be the race leaders who go through here the fastest so it could be really interesting to see everyone’s tactics here!
What is up for grabs for the winners?
Glory! We’d like to think we are a race for the people, not just the elite athletes, so we’ve been focusing our efforts on providing a cracker event that will be fun and challenging for all Guzzlers.
Everyone will get a split time in the Hell Hole Hustle, which they can compare with their mates or, even better, come back and try to beat next year.
Of course, it is a race so the fastest through will be named Grit-tiest Girl and Guy and will each score a prize pack with an Aussie Grit Shirt, Shorts and Beanie.
We’ve heard rumours that there will be funny/motivating signs about the course. Is this true?
Humour is in the eye of the beholder. For example, we think a few ghouls hanging out down in Hell Hole will be funny. Will the 100km runners think the same when they drop into the gully for the second time at ~80 km?
We’ll have to wait and see!
When is the race on and what can people do to get involved?
This year The Guzzler and the Glass Half Full is being held on the 27th and 28th July 2019. You can get involved by signing up or volunteering at www.theguzzlerultra.com.au. Even if you can’t participate, it would be amazing to have people out on course and down at the finish line cheering the Guzzlers home!
Mandatory gear for The Guzzler Ultra, 100km and 50km, includes a waterproof jacket. The Focus Jacket meets all mandatory kit requirements with lightweight, 2.5 layer waterproof breathable fabric and fully sealed seams.
